Gustavus Library Associates: Friends of the Library

In order to better inform and engage current and potential members of the Gustavus Library Associates: Friends of the Library, the Marketing and Communication Committee is pleased to bring back the Ex Libris Blog. While we know it isn’t the same as the print edition, which was last published two years ago, we hope to share book recommendations, recipes from the Gustie Gourmet II cookbook, news about the college and upcoming events, and small snippets of life in the Folke Bernadotte Memorial Library. You’ll receive an email from us occasionally with these things and more – but we also want to hear from you! Share with us what book you are loving right now, a photo of your favorite recipe, or a Caught Reading picture. You can email us at glacommunications@gustavus.edu anytime. Thank you, enjoy reading, and remember to support the library today.

You are invited to “Fika with Friends”

Who is using the library?

When you think of who is using public libraries the most, do you think of Millennials? Well, you should! The Pew Research Center shows that, “53% of Millennials (those ages 18 to 35 at the time) say they used a library or bookmobile in the previous 12 months. That compares with 45% of Gen Xers, 43% of Baby Boomers and 36% of those in the Silent Generation.” And that is just public libraries, not college libraries like our own Folke Bernadotte!

Gustie Virtual Book Club

Join nearly 500 Gustavus alumni, parents, friends, faculty, staff, and students who have already a part of the Gustie Virtual Book Club. The group will read one book every two months and hold an online discussion about each selection. The first book discussed was Power of Habit and the current book is Frankenstein. Participation is free and fun!  Visit https://www.pbc.guru/gustavus/ to learn more and join.

A Royal Affair

Remember the fun times you had hanging out with Gusties at the President’s Ball each year? It was a time to dress yourself up, temporarily forget about homework and deadlines, mingle with all your Gustie friends, and lose yourself on the dance floor to whatever song was in style that year (although, it seems “Sweet Caroline” and “Footloose” will continue to stand the test of time!).

A Royal Affair incorporates the best parts of President’s Ball from your Gustavus years, with a twist. The party will be filled with Gusties from all class years, some of your favorite professors, and friends of the College. There will be a live and silent auction with items that range from experiences and trips, to Gustie memorabilia. You will get to enjoy live entertainment, tastings, and live karaoke. Best of all, this Gustia gala benefits the Gustavus library and first-generation college student scholarships!
